5 steps to selecting the perfect area Chicago photographer for your family
Professional photography is a great way to capture memories that will last a lifetime. But with so many Chicago photographers out there, how do you choose the right one for your family or child or high school senior?
Here are a few tips:
- Think about your style. Do you want traditional posed photos in a studio or more candid “lifestyle photography”? Do you want your photos to be natural or stylized? Do you want your outfits to be formal or super casual?
- Research professional photographers in Chicagoland. Once you know what you’re looking for, it’s time to start researching photographers in your area that really resonate with what you want your photos to look like. Consider the photographer’s overall portfolio of work, their years of experience, their activity within the industry (i.e. is continuing education important to them, how do they better themselves, do they keep their creative fires burning?).
- Look for photographers who have experience in the genre you are looking to photograph. Photographers who specialize in family photography have the experience and expertise to capture your family’s special moments in a way that is both timeless and meaningful. Photographers with extensive experience with children’s photography will be able to easily connect with children. Photographers who have experience with special needs children often have some tricks up their sleeves to connect with your special needs child. Photographers who photograph high school seniors have a way of connecting with these young adults to bring out some of your young adults’ best personality traits that translate well in printed photos.
- Making sure the photographer you choose is a good fit for your family’s personality is so important. You want to work with a photographer who you feel comfortable with and who understands your family’s needs.
- Trust your gut. Ultimately, the best way to choose a photographer is to trust your gut. If you feel comfortable with the photographer and you like their style, then you’ve found the right one for your family.

We took some time to feature one of our clients that we’ve known for almost this entire time!! We have been lucky enough to see N grow from a little babe to the dynamic young man he has become. We’ve certainly grown alongside him and it has been an incredible journey to watch this baby grow into such a great young man.
Thanks to his mom, the rest of his beautiful family and to his three dogs we have created some amazing art with through the years.
